I don’t know about you but I’m a bit tired and frazzled preparing for Christmas. Spinning multiple plates and dropping a few… Feeling stressed and that I’m failing to keep on top of everything so I was chatting to my friend Nerine of https://www.mindfulmovementwithnerine.co.uk about this the other day and she always has a fascinating and useful take on it:
From Nerine
“We’ve arrived at the closing of the year and the frenetic momentum of the season has begun. Festive energy ignites around us and perhaps we are already feeling the effects of doing several things at once. It’s been a mentally and emotionally exhausting year for many of us, and it will take time for our nervous system to recover. Instead, we attempt to rally for the sake of holiday spirit so we press on endeavouring to ignore the fatigue, perhaps annoyed at the risk of slowing down.
But what if the tiredness is a blessing?
What if the fatigue is a normal response, Nature’s reminder that this is the time of year when in fact we shouldn’t be doing more. You might notice how your body resists – tension in the shoulders or increased anxiety – but do you heed the messaging? Perhaps this is the time of year, and especially this year, when allowing yourself more kindness, more calm, is not an indulgence but a matter of being health conscious.
Consider this, while more men experience heart attacks, women are more likely to die from them due to misdiagnosis. How often do we dismiss the symptoms from stress and high blood pressure, normalising them as part and parcel of the overwhelming demands we place upon ourselves?
Maybe the tiredness is a reminder to slow down before a serious illness takes hold.
Schedule a massage to help support your nervous system and encourage your shoulders to ease away from your ears. Change your yoga practice to be seasonally appropriate by incorporating more gentle, restorative work and reflective meditation.
Trust your body to be your guide this holiday season.”
